The word ‘privilege’ is a bit of a misnomer. When we use that word, we tend to think of an unearned right or advantage that we have because we are special or lucky. However, privilege as a term of art has more to do with legal rights as opposed to social ones. In this case, the phrase ‘privileges and duties’ is used as a way of picturing how Laurel and Noah will be expected to behave as They date.

First, they will be expected to behave as any couple on a first date would. You would expect that a new couple would not sleep together on the first date, nor would you expect them to call each other by nicknames. The real issue here is that Noah and Laurel will be expected to behave as the “quartet” will behave as a group over the course of their marriage.

In other words, they will be expected to treat each other as if they were married. In addition, they will have certain privileges and duties which have been outlined by the group leaders who have been chosen for this year’s wedding. For example, if Laurel sleeps with another man while she is dating Noah, it won’t be frowned upon but it won’t be encouraged either.

It will be regarded as a violation of the rules which have been set for this year’s wedding but it won’t be looked at as being unforgivable or presumptuous on her part since she really didn’t know about those rules when she started dating him in the first place.
